Do you love tight ends? Well this may NOT be the draft for you then. This class has an overall grade of a C and there is only one “can’t miss” player at the position. With four and five receiver offenses so widespread in college football offenses tight ends have been phased out in a sense but NFL teams still use tight ends and in the pro game they are one of the more prized positions in the league.
This tight end class is far from perfect, but in a weak draft class for Max Williams is far and away the best TE. The ex-Minnesota star is an ultimate mismatch and will be an immediate weapon right away. He is a solid blocker and has elite ability to make spectacular catches in the open field.
The next tier of tight ends aren’t great but the steal of the class could be Wes Saxton or Nick O’Leary, for totally different reasons. Saxton was in a run heavy offense with a very inconsistent quarterback in Brandon Bridge and played at South Alabama but he is similar to Aaron Hernandez on the field with his speed in the open field. O’Leary will drop in the draft because of his physical numbers of lack thereof but O’Leary is a do it all.
Others mentioned are the rising 6’7 Jesse James, Ben Koyack of Notre Dame, the injured but speedy Clive Walford and value tight end Tyler Kroft of Rutgers.
