Prospect Spotlight w/ JUCO Quarterback Max Staver

Here is a list of the top 10 quarterbacks from the 2013 class: Max Browne (USC), Hackenberg (Penn St), Goff (Cal), Morris (Michigan), Olsen (Miami-FL), Thomas (Oklahoma), Bateman (Alabama), Swoopes (Texas), Hill (Texas A&M) and Max Staver (Florida). 2013 had one of the more talented crops of the decade and the verdict is still out on a lot of these QB’s but Staver in particular, all these prospects I named above are still currently with their respective schools minus Olsen who was dismissed this summer and Staver.

Max Staver is a 6’6 238 pound gun slinger from Brentwood,TN (Brentwood Academy) that wowed tons of scouts including myself with his arm strength, size, toughness, leadership and clutch performances on the gridiron.

Staver was a four star dual threat recruit when entering life as a Florida Gator but with coach Brent Pease getting replaced by Kurt Roper, Staver and his support system thought maybe it was a good idea to leave some experts say.

Staver transferred to East Mississippi CC along with another talented former top QB Chad Kelly (Clemson). The story for Staver is very incomplete as of now and he’s traveled a very long road in his life. So I decided to interview the JUCO quarterback myself so we can all catch up and see where he is at in his journey in his own words.

RSEN: You started off at The Univ. Florida and transferred after your freshman year, why the early transfer from UF?

Staver: I transferred early because of the change of offense that came to Gainesville. The coaching staff with Roper and Co. felt as though they needed to move to a zone read spread offense versus a multiple offense. I wouldn’t have fit with what they do now as well.

RSEN: What was life like on campus at Gainesville and in the locker room?

Staver: Life on campus in Gainesville was a lot of fun. It’s a great academic university and has a unique feel to it. In the locker room, I was close with a lot of guys. The players did a great job of constantly encouraging and picking one another up.

RSEN: You are now at Tyler Junior College (Tyler,TX) Why did you choose Tyler JC after being enrolled at East Mississippi JC?

Staver: I chose Tyler Junior College because they had a need, also I loved the campus and town of Tyler. It’s a great junior college, and has a winning football tradition.

RSEN: We’ve seen a super successful trend of JUCO quarterbacks translate well to the college game with the likes of Jake Waters, Bo Wallace, Zaxh Mettenberger, Nick Marshall and Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton just to name a few. Why do you think JUCO quarterbacks translate so well to the next level?

Staver:  I believe Junior College quarterbacks translate well to the next level because they play with a chip on their shoulder. With a lot of guys, that year in junior college really humbles them and helps them mature as a man but also as a football player.

RSEN: Let me ask this, is Max Staver a problem off the field, in the locker room or with coaches?

Staver: I am not a problem off the field, I never have been in any sort of trouble legally or with team policy. I am in Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and volunteer my time to the community.

RSEN: Who does your game most remind yourself of?

Staver: My game mostly reminds me of a Joe Flacco, Zac Mettenberger, or Andrew Luck’s style of play.

RSEN:  I’ve heard rumors of offers from schools like; Baylor, Texas, Cincinnati, Oklahoma and  Louisville. Where do you see yourself next at the Division 1 level?

Staver: At this point I can’t really say where I will end up signing with. From what I understand Juco quarterbacks are a late deal with a lot of schools. They have to wait to see what direction they want to head in. I have heard from a few schools, but I do expect a little bit more interest as the Division 1 season comes to an end.

Well there you have it folks, we have officially caught up with Max Staver and I predict huge things for the JUCO quarterback in the next years to come. If he can stay focus, get in the right system and keeping improving everyday as a player Staver is on the high road to success.
