We’ve discussed quite a few great coaches in College Football over the years. Gus Malzahn has turned around a program at the university of Auburn, Oregon’s Mark Helfrich has inherited a great team from Chip Kelly who left for the NFL, there’s Les Miles and we can’t forget Nick Saban who’s done a magnificent job at the head coach in Tuscaloosa. Then, we have Urban Meyer who just simply seems to win wherever he goes. Last night, Urban joined his colleague Nick Saban as the second coach to win a National Championship at multiple universities. That’s a huge accomplishment in college sports today.
So? What is it that makes Urban Meyer so great? He brings discipline to the table as a head coach. When you talk about the game of football today, the team that shows more discipline across the board will more than likely be very successful. Every team I’ve seen him coach didn’t really commit many penalties and most teams will always take after their coach. Secondly, he’s the true definition of a players coach. His players love him and he loves his players back and that’s a great quality for a coach to have. When you have the respect of your team as a whole, it will show and he’s a great leader. The key to a healthy locker room is having your entire team on the same page. When Urban speaks, the team listens. He’s a great motivator and he’s very well-respected not just by his team but the opponent as well. That says a lot about who he is as a person.
Urban Meyer will go down as one of the best college football coaches of all time when it’s all said and done. He has quite the impressive resume. Wherever he’s coached, he’s won. He had a career mark of 17-6 at Bowling Green, a 22-2 record at Utah, a 65-15 record at Florida that included two National Championships and so far at Ohio State, he’s 38-3 with another title under his belt. Altogether, he’s 142-26 as a head coach.
