Green Bay Packers Training Camp: Day One

After nearly six months of no football, it’s back and better than ever with the Green Bay Packers first day of training camp. Fans were already waiting outside Lambeau Field by 6:30 a.m. and the stands at Ray Nitschke we’re filled by nearly 7:30 a.m. The Packers took the field around 8:30 a.m. and the season began.

The first day of practice was a no-pads run through of plays and drills. Despite there being no pads or contact we still saw players hitting the field. One player was hurt in the process, and not one that could afford the injury.

Jared Abbrederis came down hard on the field after trying to break up an interception. Abbrederis left practice half way through because of the “injury”.

Mike McCarthy was asked about the injury in his post practice press conference. He responded by saying that he didn’t believe the injury was related to his surgically repaired knee.

Abbrederis tore his ACL last year during training camp just three days in. With a loaded wide receiver core, his chances of making the team are getting more slim by the day.

Sam Shields was also seen leaving the field on and off throughout practice. McCarthy ended any speculation of injury when he said that Shields was leaving due to shoe issues.

Undrafted free agent, Matt Rotheram, was seen walking on the sideline with an ice pack taped to his right calf. We don’t know the full extent of the injury at this time.

Some key observations from the first day of camp. Damarious Randall and Casey Hayward alternated at the outside cornerback and slot positions. Nate Palmer got reps with the first team as an inside linebacker when Clay Matthews would move outside. Lastly, the offense and defense committed 12 penalties during their no-huddle drill. Nine of those were false starts.

Here are some pictures from today’s practice via Kyle Engman, Green Bay Press-Gazette’s Ryan Wood and Evan Siegle. Kyle will be in Green Bay for training camp tomorrow and Saturday as well.
