Brashaud Breeland Suspended For 1 Game

Bashaud Breeland

The Washington Redskins open the 2015-2016 season at home against the Miami Dolphins, but today they’ve learned that they will be without a familiar face in the secondary for that September 13 matchup. Brashaud Breeland, the second-year cornerback out of Clemson, will be serving a one-game suspension, according to NFL.com’s Albert Breer.

This suspension stems from an incident last August, in which Breeland was cited for posession of marijuana while he was on the campus of Virginia Commonwealth University at the conclusion of Redskins training camp.

Breeland had an up and down rookie season in 2014. He displayed several flashes of brilliance, such as his performance against Dez Bryant in a Monday night game against the Dallas Cowboys, or his game-winning interception in a week 16 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles. However, he had his share of rookie mistakes as well, such as the plethora of pass-interference penalties against him.

Breeland is expected to compete for a starting job with David Amerson, who had an abysmal 2014 campaign, and DeAngelo Hall, who’s returning to play after missing the 2014 season with a torn ACL. The winner of this battle is going to play alongside newcomer Chris Culliver, who ws brought in from the San Francisco 49ers.
