Virginia and Virginia Tech played a grinding, 55 possession game, where neither team scored more than 0.85 points per possession. With :49 seconds left a Jontel Evans runner cut the Hokies lead to 44-43. Virginia called a timeout. Virginia Tech ran some clock but couldn’t do anything, so the Hokies called a timeout with :26.4 seconds left (and :11 left on the shot clock).
After the previous timeout Virginia had broke the huddle with 6’8 Akil Mitchell guarding the Hokies’ Dorenzo Hudson. On three of the previous four possessions Hudson had posted up smaller UVA guards, and he converted on two of those possessions (one jump hook, one trip to the line). The screencap below is from the 3rd possession, and Virginia Tech has cleared out, allowing a two man game between Hudson and Erick Green.
With :26.4 left in the game and Seth Greenberg recognizing that Virginia had put the larger Mitchell on Hudson to take away that post game, the Hokies changed their set. Hudson inbounded the ball in front of the Hokie bench and then drifted to the far corner.
Erick Green got the defense moving away from Hudson and then reversed the ball. Akil Mitchell, used to playing more on the interior, had drifted too far away from Hudson who was able to get the shot off.
That proved to be the difference in the game, and the Hokies won on the road 47-45. Here’s the full video:
