Umberger scores, Flyers Beat Sabres

Earlier today, I received word that Matt Read and Scott Laughton were out and Jordan Weal was set to make his second Flyers’ start. In addition, Rj Umberger surprisingly crawled back into the lineup. The second and third line were shuffled, the second line consisted of Raffl, Schenn and Cousins while the third line was changed to Weal, Gagner and Umberger.

Period 1: I showed up late to the game but thank goodness I did.  The only thing I missed was Brayden Schenn getting rocked along the boards. The Sabers out shot the Flyers 14-6, keeping Steve Mason busy. One of the main reasons for the disparity in shots was that Flyers were charged with 3 straight penalties(2 by Mark Streit), but the Flyers held strong. I was surprised considering the Sabres have the sixth best power play in hockey. Regardless it was a relatively quiet period that ended 0-0

Period 2: Wow! What a period! and I mean what a period. It all started when R.J. Umberger broke the 0-0 tie, yes you read that right, R.J. Umberger scored for the first time in over year. Shortly after, Brayden Schenn puts one home making it 2-0. The fun didn’t just ended there, Wayne Simmonds snuck one in as well making it 3-0, a goal extending Shayne Gostisbehere point streak to 10 points. Ghost tied for the franchise record for longest point streak by a rookie defensemen and currently holds the NHL’s longest active point streak. Raffl, showing off some speed on a breakaway, made it 4-0 and, to add to the fun, Radko Gudas fought Marcus Foligno during the goal celebration. The Flyers are still taking undisciplined penalties while Ghost is still trying out new sticks to fit his style. The Flyers lead 4-0 after 2.

Period 3: The third period started as you expected from any team with a comfortable lead. The Flyers had a defensive meltdown early in the 3rd allowing the Sabers put one in making it 4-1. However, shortly after, Nick Cousins made a nice defensive block and showed great speed scoring on a breakaway for his first goal in a Flyers’ uniform, as well as first in his career, making it 5-1. When you think this game cant get more interesting for Radko Gudas, he put a crushing blow on Catenacci and continued swinging some fist after it. This resulted in a 5 minute major giving Gudas a total of 17 penalty minutes on the night. Mason played unbelievable tonight, making 41 saves leading the Flyers to a 5-1 win.
