The Name Game

What’s in a name? Well…letters.

However, there are some names that sound a little more basebally(for lack of a better term) than others. These names flow, ring and make you go “Now that sounds like a ball player”. The all time greats have that connection…Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle and Yogi Berra sound like a sweet symphony to a sport fan’s ears. Whether it be the double first letter or the fun nickname, these players names pop more than the usual athlete.

That being said, let’s re-draft the top 10 picks of the 2016 MLB Draft based soley on the names of players drafted in the first round.

#1 Philadelphia Phillies

Mickey Moniak, OF

Whether it’s Mickey Mantle or Mickey Morandini, there is something about the double M that makes a player special. The fact that this kid can go by either Money Moniak or Mickey Money makes him a guaranteed star in the making.

#2 Cincinatti Reds

Cal Quantrill, RHP

Although he sounds more like a hitter, that C to Q combo is hard to ignore. Look for him to throw atleast three perfect games next season

#3 Atlanta Braves

Riley Pint, RHP

It may not be the best baseball name but the Braves are in desperate need of a pint…or pitcher…get it?

#4 Colorado Rockies

Carter Kieboom, SS

Kieboom, Kaboom. This is a perennial 40 home run name and I expect him to live up to it. Swing away, Carter.

#5 Milaukee Brewers

Dane Dunning, RHP

There is something that flows about the double consonant name, especially when both names begin with D.

#6 Oakland Athletics

Forrest Whitley, RHP

About as country as a name comes. However, country can be good when it comes to baseball names. “Country” tend to be baseball hotbeds and with that comes great names. Plus, it would be great to see Whitley sitting in the bullpen just like his namesake:

#7 Miami Marlins

Corey Ray, OF

It’s short, it’s sweet, it’ll look good on a baseball card.

#8 San Diego Padres

Braxton Garrett, LHP

Braxton is another one of those southern names that just screams baseball.

#9 Detroit Tigers

A.J. Puk, LHP

Initals and baseball seem to go hand and hand. R.A. Dickey, J.D. Martinez and J.D. Drew are just a few members of their group. Combine the initials with a short, easy to say last name and you have a recipe for baseball success.

#10 Chicago White Sox

Will Smith, C

Southside Chicago will be Gettin’ Jiggy With It with Mr. Smith behind home plate.
