Flyers Week In Review

Weekly Game Recap

The Flyers knew they were heading into a must win week. They were playing teams that weren’t in playoff contention like the Winnipeg Jets and the Ottawa Senators. However, they also had to play arguably the best team in the Eastern Conference, and arch-rival, the Washington Capitals.

Winnipeg Jets @ Philadelphia Flyers: The Flyers started their first period of the “have to win week” slow, but the second proved to be much different when Sean Couturier set up a pinching Mark Streit for a nice goal to make it 1-0.

The fun didn’t end there! A couple minutes later, Wayne Simmonds put one in from the blue line, an area he doesn’t scores most of his goals, to make it 2-0.

The Flyers were on a roll and off to a good start, but a bad turnover by Jakub Voracek led to a breakaway goal by Mark Scheifele to make it 2-1 to close out the second period.

The Flyers were flat again to start the third period, which lead to an early goal by Blake Wheeler to tie it 2-2. That would be all of the scoring in the third as the two teams would end regulation tied at two.

Overtime was scoreless until 14 seconds remaining when, the Flyers’ savior, Shayne Gostisbehere made an unbelievable play that had everyone talking.

The Flyers won the game and earned two crucial points in a heated playoff race.

Washington Capitals @ Philadelphia Flyers: The Flyers headed into this game needing another two points to keep putting space between them and the Detroit Red Wings. What the Flyers didn’t know they were playing in one of the most physical games of the season. The first period was methodical which lead to  that physical, the period ended 0-0. The second period was all big body hit and amazing saves. However, the score would remain tied despite a flurry of opportunities. The third period put an end to the 0-0 tie with one of the best goal scorers in the league breaking the tie. Alex Ovechkin slapped one in to make it 1-0. The Flyers knew they needed to win this game, so they battled hard and hit even harder. Finally, the Flyers caught a break when Brayden Schenn redirected a Claude Giroux slapshot tying it 1-1 and taking the game to overtime.

The OT was a disaster with a lot of questionable calls against the Flyers, keeping them shorthanded for most of the overtime. However, the penalty kill remained strong and forced the game into a shootout, which is every Flyers fan worse nightmare. Nonetheless, the Flyers ended the drought. Nick Cousins and Sam Gagner both scored and defeated the Caps 2-1

Ottawa Senators @ Philadelphia Flyers: The flyers ended their home stand against the Ottawa Senators  The Flyers started off sluggish giving up some bad turnovers and not producing any shots on net the whole first half of the period. The Flyers had a powerless power play which continues not to produce as it should. The period ended with a questionable roughing penalty, sending both Nick Cousins and a Senator to the box after this questionable hit. The period would end scoreless.

Early in the second period, Wayne Simmonds redirected one in to make it 1-0

After Simmonds scored that goal, the Flyers let their foot off the gas pedal and started to give the Senators more chances on Mason. The Flyers soon found their groove and Sean Couturier puts one in off of a rebound on the power play. Zibanejad keeps it a one goal lead making it 2-1 to end the period with Ottawa leading in shots 26-23.

The period started off well with the flyers dominating, which led to the Senators taking a stupid penalty, but the man himself, Wayne Simmonds, scored on the power play making it 3-1.

Later the senators broke the 3-1 lead by putting one in on the power play. The Flyers held strong and defeated the Ottawa Senators in a hard fought battle til the end. The Flyers win 3-2 earning a crucial 2 points to keep putting distance between themselves and the Detroit Red Wings.
The Flyers went 3-0 this week in their home stand, all three games came down to end, but it was the Flyers all three times who got it done.
