Pelle Lindbergh was one of the most promising young athletes in the history of Philadelphia sports. Lindbergh tragically lost his life in the early morning hours on November 11, 1985 in a car crash. The crash occurred in Somerdale, New Jersey on what is now known as Somerdale Road. A few months back, I was driving on that road and drove passed the site where the city of Philadelphia lost one of its youngest and brightest stars. As I continued on, it came to me that the Lindbergh’s life should be memorialized on the road it was ended. Somerdale Road should, without a doubt, be renamed in memory of the fallen Flyers goaltender.
Lindbergh’s skill was second to none and his potential seemed endless every time he stepped on the ice for the orange and black. Former Flyers great, Bernie Parent, saw the same potential in the young Fin and took Lindbergh under his wing. Under the tutelage of one of the greatest net minders of all time, Pelle was named to the 1983 NHL All-Rookie team, the 1985 All-Star game, and won the 1985 Vezina trophy as the leagues best goalie. The 1984-’85 season was Lindberghs best, posting 40 wins, 17 loses, and 7 ties.
It is so often in sports that we lose athletes tragically and at such early ages. Lindbergh was poised to be one of the greatest goalies, not only in Flyers history, but in league history. Admittedly yes, Lindbergh’s accident was caused by alcohol and should serve as a warning to those who drink and drive. However, that cannot overshadow the fact that this was a kid in the prime of his life, living on the top of the world who had it all taken away from him. Just for the memories, though short, that Pelle brought to this area he should be given a memorial. You’ll see no retired number banner in the rafters of the Wells Fargo Center, or a statue standing tall outside of the stadium. Pelle Lindbergh gave so much to this city and this area should be remembered forever where he lost his life.
