Report: Jacoby Brissett has torn right thumb ligament, needs surgery

For the second week in a row, a New England Patriots quarterback has been injured.

WEEI Boston’s Mike Petraglia reports Jacoby Brissett has a torn right thumb ligament, which he suffered in the second half against the Houston Texans on Thursday night, and will need surgery.

The 23-year-old rookie out of North Carolina State went 11-of-19 for 103 yards and rushed for 48 yards with a touchdown last night, as the Patriots routed the Texans 27-0. Brissett happened to be starting for Jimmy Garoppolo, who hurt his shoulder last Sunday against the Miami Dolphins.

With Brissett and Garoppolo dealing with injuries, and Tom Brady still needing to serve one more game of his suspension, it’s unclear who will be playing quarterback for the Patriots in Week 4 against the Buffalo Bills. Julian Edelman, the team’s top receiver, is a former college quarterback and likely the next man up.

It will be interesting to see how coach Bill Belichick handles the situation. Last week, he and the coaching staff got Brissett ready in less than a week. Can he do it again with Edelman or someone else they bring in?
