Cam Newton: LeBron James is better than Stephen Curry

Is LeBron James the best player in the NBA, or is it Stephen Curry?

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, who is friends with both players, announced that James is a better basketball player during an appearance on WFNZ-AM radio’s “The Mac Attack” show.

“A person asked me, ‘Well, is Steph Curry the best basketball player on the planet?'” Newton said. “I said, ‘No.’ I said, ‘Steph Curry is the best basketball player on the best team on the planet.’

“I still think LeBron is [the best player]. He’s 6-7, athletic, can do anything on the court. But LeBron is not on the best team. Going back to what I was saying, the power of team will always be better than the power of skill.”

Curry, the MVP in back-to-back seasons and the first unanimous MVP ever, plays for one of the best basketball teams in history in the Golden State Warriors, who set an NBA record with 73 wins during the regular season. James, on the other hand, is a four-time MVP, a two-time champion and plays for the best basketball team in the Eastern Conference.

Both players are at the top of the NBA’s pecking order. Newton’s explanation for picking James is that he’s asked to carry his team more so than Curry. If that were the format for picking the MVP, then James might be this year’s MVP instead of Curry.

We’ll see how Curry, a huge Panthers fan, takes Newton’s argument.
