Joey Bosa: ‘I have to show teams that I’ve changed’

Joey Bosa isn’t letting his past get in the way of his future.

The former Ohio State defensive end was drafted third overall by the San Diego Chargers Thursday, and he owned up to his wrongdoing in the past with ESPN’s Josina Anderson.

Bosa was among four players suspended for Ohio State’s opener in 2015 for an unspecified violation of athletic department policy. ESPN’s Joe Schad reported that the athletic department policy suspensions were due to issues involving “marijuana and academics.”

But according to cleveland.com’s Doug Lesmerises, Bosa did more than just serve his suspension. He visited patients at the James Cancer Hospital while missing Ohio State’s trip to Virginia Tech.

“It’s been a little bit humbling,” co-defensive coordinator Luke Fickell said at the time of Bosa’s suspension. “Whether it’s what has happened or another year of maturity, I can seriously sit here and tell you that Joey Bosa is a different kid, a different player than he was last year.”

“He’s done everything and above what we’ve asked,” head coach Urban Meyer added. “I saw what I hoped to see from him. With the kind of family he’s from and the kind of person he is, I kind of expected that. But I’m glad I saw it.”

Bosa’s college coaches saw a change, and the player himself is committed to showing teams he has changed. No doubt the Chargers appreciate that.
