Josh McCown says Browns have spoken to him about Cowboys trade talk

Josh McCown is aware that his name has come up in trade talks with the Dallas Cowboys. He told reporters on Thursday that the Cleveland Browns have spoken to him on the matter.

The Cowboys are looking for a new backup quarterback after Kellen Moore suffered a broken ankle this week. NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport is reporting that Dallas has interest in McCown after missing out on Nick Foles, who agreed to a deal with the Kansas City Chiefs on Wednesday.

McCown is from Texas and acknowledged that he’s worn No. 12 for most of his career as a tribute to legendary Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach. But the 37-year-old journeyman says he’s focused on the job at hand with the Browns.

“The Cowboys, if you grew up in Texas, is near and dear to everybody’s heart,” McCown told reporters. “But once you cross over into the business portion of this life, those allegiances kind of fly out the window and you have a job to do. And so for me, my job and my heart is here — and doing everything I can to help the Cleveland Browns be good. So that’s what I’m about.”

“And like I’ve told you guys before,” McCown said, “you spend five minutes in this city and it’s easy to be all in because of how people feel about this team.”

ESPN’s Ed Werder reports that the Browns are “reluctant” to let McCown go. But if the Cowboys come with the right offer, they may be able to pry McCown away.
