Report: Dion Waiters agrees to one-year deal with Heat

Unrestricted free agent Dion Waiters has agreed to a one-year deal with the Miami Heat, reports Jon Krawczynski of the Associated Press. Waiters will make $2.9 million.

The 24-year-old guard averaged 9.8 points in 78 games for the Oklahoma City Thunder last year, including 15 starts. He shot just under 40 percent overall and 35.8 percent on 3-pointers.

Waiters, who has come of the bench for most of his career, becomes the heavy favorite to replace Dwyane Wade at shooting guard in Miami, where he’ll compete with Tyler Johnson, Josh Richardson and free-agent acquisition Wayne Ellington.

The No. 4 overall pick by Cleveland in 2004, Waiters still hasn’t hit his potential yet. If he plays well on a one-year deal for the Heat, he may be able to convince the team to keep him long term.
