Report: Dwight Freeney to sign one-year deal with Falcons

No team has had fewer sacks (73) over the last three seasons than the Atlanta Falcons. Dwight Freeney has more sacks than all but three active players in the NFL.

On Tuesday, the Falcons agreed to sign the veteran pass-rusher to a one-year deal, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported.

Freeney, who totaled eight sacks in 11 games for the Arizona Cardinals last season, comes to Atlanta where he’ll be expected to jump-start the Falcons defense, which finished with a league-low 19 sacks in 2015. The 38-year-old ranks 19th all-time on the career sacks list with 119.5 in 14 seasons. According to Pro Football Focus, he finished sixth among 3-4 outside linebackers in pass-rushing productivity last year.

This is a good signing for the Falcons, who needed pass-rushing help. Freeney, and his spin move, can still perform at a high level.
