Report: Kings GM expected to meet with Luke Walton after first round of playoffs

The Sacramento Kings are looking for a new head coach after they fired George Karl nearly a week ago. It comes as no surprise that Golden State Warriors lead assistant Luke Walton is among the candidates being considered for the job.

According to Ailene Voisin of the Sacramento Bee, Kings GM Vlade Divac is expected to meet with Walton to discuss his team’s coaching vacancy probably after Golden State’s first-round playoff series against the Houston Rockets. Walton coached the Warriors to a 39-4 record in the absence of Steve Kerr this season and has also drawn interest from the New York Knicks.

Kerr said Monday that Walton will receive permission to interview for any head-coaching job he wishes to pursue, but it would be after a series ended. He also made it clear that the Knicks have not formally contacted Walton about their coaching vacancy, even though team president Phil Jackson reportedly discussed it with Walton.

According to Voisin, Divac is particularly intrigued by a small group of potential candidates that includes Walton, San Antonio Spurs assistant Ettore Messina, former Chicago Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau and former Oklahoma City Thunder coach Scott Brooks.
