Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Ryan Vogelsong left Monday’s game against the Colorado Rockies in the second inning after being hit in the face by a pitch.
Vogelsong was batting with the bases loaded and one out in the second inning when Rockies right-hander Jordan Lyles appeared to strike Vogelsong in the face with a 92-mph fastball. Vogelsong fell immediately in the batter’s box, where head athletic trainer Todd Tomczyk tended to him. He left the field on a cart with a towel covering up the left side of his face.

Usually a reliever, Vogelsong made a spot start Monday because rain postponed Sunday’s game. Left-hander Jeff Locke entered the game as a pinch-runner for Vogelsong, and right hander Wilfredo Boscan took over pitching in the third inning.
