Bills not shutting down Sammy Watkins right now

Sammy Watkins isn’t done yet.

Buffalo Bills coach Rex Ryan told reporters on Monday that the team has no plans to shut down the third-year receiver after he experienced some discomfort in his surgically-repaired left foot following Sunday’s 13-7 loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

“He’s sore,” Ryan said of his No. 1 receiver. “Hopefully he’ll progress through the week and be ready. Not shutting him down right now.”

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports Watkins had X-rays and was sent to a foot specialist for a review, but that he will likely have to play through the pain this year as there is nothing surgically to do with the injury.

The Bills have a short week to prepare, with the New York Jets coming to town on Thursday. It’s uncertain if Watkins will be available.

Watkins had a breakout season last year, catching 60 passes for 1,047 yards and nine touchdowns despite missing three games due to injury. The Bills were expecting more from him in 2016, but it appears he will be limited this season.
