Cam Newton deflects concussion questions, says ‘I worry about winning’

Panthers quarterback Cam Newton was asked Wednesday about the NFL’s investigation into whether or not he should have been taken out of last week’s game against the Broncos after repeated hits to the head.

Newton didn’t want to hear it.

“I worry about winning. That’s it. Winning. Winning football games. That’s why I’m here,” Newton said, according to Pro Football Talk. “I’m not here to worry about retirement plans. I’m not here to worry about pensions. I’m not here to worry about worker’s comp. I’m here to win football games, simple and plain.”

The NFL is looking into whether or not the concussion protocol was followed during the Panthers’ 21-20 loss at Denver last Thursday night. Two of the Broncos’ hits to his head resulted in fines. But Newton said Wednesday he didn’t feel any concussion effects, no “wooziness,” despite the beating his head took.

And at one point, Newton had enough of the concussion questions.

“We’re dwelling on something that I don’t want to dwell on,” Newton said. “My focus is the San Francisco’ 49ers’ defense, the team that shut out the Los Angeles Rams.”

Maybe that’s one thing Newton shouldn’t be worried about. There might be reasons for him to be concerned about the 49ers’ defense, but the ability to shut out the Rams isn’t one of them.
