Colin Kaepernick’s teammates want him to take over starting job

The San Francisco 49ers sit in 1-3 hole to start the season and some players sound ready to have Colin Kaepernick as the starting quarterback.

Kaepernick has taken a backseat to Blaine Gabbert, who has thrown four touchdowns to as many interceptions while only completing 58 percent of his passes over the four games.

According to a report by Bleacher Report’s Matt Miller, a growing portion of the locker room wants Kaepernick to replace Gabbert.

It’s an interesting situation, as Kaepernick tossed six touchdowns to five interceptions last year in limited action. He dealt with an injury and simply hasn’t had his weight where it needs to be so he can act as the starter.

Still, the 49ers need to do something different on offense. Carlos Hyde has rushed for five scores on a solid start to the season, but Jeremy Kerley and Garrett Celek are the team’s leading receivers.

Getting Kaepernick under center might provide some much-needed versatility to the offense, as he did rush for 256 yards and a score last year.

So far, San Francisco has only scored north of 20 points twice. With the rebuilding defense having coughed up 24 or more points in three games, head coach Chip Kelly will unleash Kaepernick sooner or later so the organization can figure out if it has a long-term solution under center.

From there, Kaepernick can take back his starting job and potentially keep it for a long time.
