Cubs issue apology for playing ‘Smack My B**** Up’ as Aroldis Chapman left mound

The Chicago Cubs committed a mind-numbing gaffe Sunday night involving closer Aroldis Chapman.

For one reason or another, the song “Smack My B**** Up” by The Prodigy made its way into the stadium’s playlist—and then manged to get played as Chapman left the mound in the ninth inning.

Not only is the song incredibly insensitive on its own, Chapman was recently suspended 30 games for violating MLB’s domestic violence policy, adding a simply head-shaking factor to this whole ordeal.

ESPN’s Jesse Rogers provided the apology:

The Cubs say they unintentionally played the song ‘Smack My B**** Up’ last night when Aroldis Chapman walked off the mound in the ninth inning. The Cubs will have a strong response to it this morning. It was “unfortunate and should not have happened,” according to the team.

Twitter hit the nail on the head as far as analysis goes:

The song should have never been in the playlist to begin with. Hoax or not, the Cubs have some explaining to do.

Stay turned for more, as it’s hard to imagine a “we’re sorry” is the end of this.
