Even referees lose their cool and make judgement errors sometimes.
That’s what happened back in January during a tournament game between St. Mary’s College and Sault High, when one of the craziest brawls of the year erupted.
It started after a scrum broke out, when one ref attempted to break it up by pulling a SMC player away. The player grabbed the ref by his shirt, and that didn’t go over well. The ref attempted to break away from him by taking a swipe at the player, which wasn’t a very good idea, and that’s when all hell broke loose.
Two other SMC players came to the aide of their teammate and began beating on the ref with a barrage of punches—knocking him to the ice. A brawl then erupted.
The fight was eventually broken up, and the police were called.
Somehow, the two players who jumped the ref were only suspended two games for their actions.
