Ichiro proved Sunday that he can be just as good at preventing hits as he is at getting them.
The Mets’ Michael Conforto led off the top of the fifth with a drive off Marlins starter Jose Fernandez. Ichiro got the jump he needed on the ball and made an acrobatic grab just short of the warning track to take away extra bases.
It wasn’t like Fernandez needed much help. He held New York to just four hits while striking out 14, matching his career-high, through seven innings — exiting with a slim 1-0 lead.
