Jake Arrieta loses regular season game for first time since last July

The invincible Jake Arrieta finally looked human. Chicago’s ace right-hander lost to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday at Wrigley Field. He hadn’t suffered a defeat during the regular season since July 25, 2015 — a streak of 24 starts (and 20 victories).

Despite striking out 12, Arrieta gave up nine hits and three runs over five innings. His opposite number, Arizona’s Patrick Corbin, outdid the reigning NL Cy Young Award winner by giving up two runs in seven innings and limiting the potent Cubs offense.

Arrieta is now 9-1 on the season, and saw his ERA grew to 1.80. The loss last July 25th came against the Philadelphia Phillies, when Cole Hamels tossed a no-hitter.
