Marvin Jones has a weird way of dealing with muscle cramps

Most athletes will reach for a sports drink to fight off cramps, but not Marvin Jones. He has a different way of dealing with cramps, and it comes in a glass jar.

“I had really bad cramps a lot,” the Detroit Lions wide receiver told MLive.com’s Kyle Meinke. “I used to drink pickle juice, and it helps. It does help, all the salt.”

An ounce or two of pickle juice can stop cramping within about 85 seconds, as it has about 20 times more sodium and eight times more potassium than a regular sports drink, says Molly Kimball, a registered dietitian in New Orleans (via NOLA.com).

Jones told Meinke his use of the juice almost led to an endorsement deal with a pickle company who wanted him as a pitchman, but he declined, not wanting to be known as the pickle guy.

The former Bengals receiver is coming off his best season yet, having caught 65 passes for 816 yards and four touchdowns in 2015. He signed with the Lions for five years, $40 million during the offseason, and he will be depended upon to produce in the passing game after the departure of All-Pro receiver Calvin Johnson, who retired at the ripe age of 30.

Odds are Jones will be drinking a lot of pickle juice this season considering how much playing time he’s going to get.
