Mike Zimmer says Packers, Vikings aren’t rivals yet

Vikings coach Mike Zimmer would like to see his team beat the Packers more frequently for the twice-annual matchup to be considered a rivalry, according to NFL.com.

The Packers (1-0) visit the Vikings (1-0) in the first NFL game at U.S. Bank Stadium on Sunday night.

Even if the Vikings are 1-3 against the Packers since Zimmer took over as head coach and 2-10-1 against them since 2010, the familiarity between the two sides breeds the contempt necessary for a rivalry. They’ve met 109 times in the regular season. That’s the same number of times the Vikings have played the Bears and Lions because the Vikings have been in the same division as those teams since the franchise was born in 1961.

The Packers hold the all-time edge with a 58-49-2 record because of their recent surge in the series.

The Vikings overcame a 10-0 halftime deficit at Tennessee to win their season opener 25-16. Zimmer refuses to concede 2016 as a lost season just because of Teddy Bridgewater’s season-ending injury. So it shouldn’t be surprising that he won’t take credit for being a rival of the Packers until his team starts holding up its end of it.
