Report: Browns didn’t think Carson Wentz was ‘top 20’ quarterback

It hasn’t taken a top-20 NFL quarterback to beat the Browns in recent years. So when Eagles rookie Carson Wentz makes his NFL debut this Sunday, the Browns could be right about him and still lose their season opener.

The Browns could have had Wentz with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2016 draft, but traded the pick to the Eagles because they didn’t believe Wentz was a “t0p 20” quarterback, according to ESPN.com.

New Browns coach Hue Jackson and the rest of the Browns brainstrust decided instead to try to remake Robert Griffin III.

When the schedule came out in April, “Cleveland at Philadelphia” in Week 1 didn’t exactly stand out.

Interest in that game might have perked up a little bit when the Browns traded the No. 2 pick to the Eagles, but it still wasn’t a “must-see” game.

Then when the Eagles traded Sam Bradford to the Vikings on Saturday, Wentz became the starter and this interconference game suddenly comes with plenty of intrigue.

Regardless of what happens Sunday, however, it will be a while before we know if the Browns were right about Wentz.
