Report: Cardinals have ‘legitimate curiosity’ in Carlos Gomez

The St. Louis Cardinals have “legitimate curiosity” in outfielder Carlos Gomez after Matt Holliday broke a thumb in Thursday night’s game against Chicago, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch‘s Derrick Goold said in an interview Friday on The Morning After 920 AM show.

The Houston Astros designated Gomez for assignment earlier this week after hitting a meager .210 with five home runs and 29 RBIs in 295 at-bats this season. He has disappointed since coming over in a trade last July, though he was productive as recently as 2014 with Milwaukee when he it .284 with 23 home runs and 73 RBIs, finishing 16th in NL MVP voting.

Holliday is headed to the disabled list, and it’s uncertain if he’ll return this season. Tommy Pham, Randal Grichuk and Jeremy Hazelbaker are the Cardinals’ options to replace Holliday, but adding Gomez would give them more experience in center field.

The Cardinals had better act quick, though. ESPN’s Mark Saxon tweeted that St. Louis could be outbid by the New York Mets, who are also interested in Gomez.
