Report: Larry Fitzgerald planning to retire after 2016 season

The 2016 NFL season could be the swan song for likely Hall of Fame receiver Larry Fitzgerald.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Fitzgerald has made it known to those around him that he plans on 2016 being his final season in the NFL.

Fitzgerald, who turned 33 in August, has spent his entire 12-year career with the Arizona Cardinals. His decorated career has included 1,018 receptions, 13,366 yards and 98 touchdowns, plus nine Pro Bowls and three All-Pro selections.

The Cardinals’ all-time leader in catches, yards and touchdowns, Fitzgerald signed a one-year contract extension this summer. He is now under contract in Arizona through the 2017 season.

The timing feels a little odd, especially with Fitzgerald coming off one of his finest seasons. He set a career high with 109 receptions last season, when the Cardinals won 13 games and advanced to the NFC Championship Game.

His father, Larry Fitzgerald Sr., responded to Rapoport stating he hadn’t heard anything about retirement.

Stay tuned. Expecting to retire and actually retiring are two very different things.
