Rex Ryan is Keeping the Bills’ Week 1 Starter a Secret

It certainly didn’t take long for the Rex Ryan era in Buffalo to get interesting.  In an abrupt change from his days as the New York Jets head coach, where Ryan was saddled with the likes of Mark Sanchez, Tim Tebow, and Geno Smith at quarterback, the loquacious head coach now finds himself in a situation where his QB’s are all performing so well that he can’t decide who will be Buffalo’s starter in Week 1.

Rex Ryan started off the day on Saturday feeling good about his quarterback situation, naming all four on the roster as team captains for Buffalo’s preseason matchup with the Pittsburgh Steelers.  The vote of confidence paid off as the group combined to finish an impressive 30-33, while totaling 395 yards and three touchdowns.

“This is the ideal situation we had talked about,” said Ryan. “This is exactly what I wanted, where all three guys played to their abilities. That’s all I was hoping for. I had confidence in all three of them and they did a tremendous job.”

Rumor has it that Rex Ryan will decide on Sunday which quarterback will be the Week 1 starter in the Bills’ matchup against the Colts. However, the generally talkative Ryan plans on remaining tight-lipped about the verdict to keep the Indianapolis coaching staff on their toes.

Matt Simms appears to be the odd man out and is expected to take on the clean-up duty as the starter in Buffalo’s fourth preseason game.  Cassel, Taylor, and Manuel are each expected to make the Bills’ 53-man roster when the final cut-downs are made.
