Spurs to chase Stephen Curry in free agency?

Stephen Curry to the San Antonio Spurs doesn’t sound so crazy, does it?

Maybe this was outlandish a year ago. But after watching Kevin Durant ditch the Oklahoma City Thunder in favor of the Golden State Warriors, anything seems possible.

In fact, Durant heading to Golden State might have more long-term ramifications on the Western Conference than previously thought. As Bleacher Report’s Ric Bucher pointed out, the Spurs could make a serious push at Curry (h/t Hoops Hype):

I think the Spurs are looking at the fact that Kevin Durant came into Golden State and that Kevin Durant may take up some of the superstar space that was previously occupied by Steph Curry… and when Steph Curry becomes a free agent, I think they are going to go hard at Steph Curry.

Again, not such a crazy thought.

Durant, Curry and the Warriors might go on to win a title in dominant fashion. On the other end of the spectrum, it could wind up as a case of too many cooks in the kitchen and things implode. Either way, one of the major names leaving Golden State isn’t hard to fathom. Ride off into the sunset to forge more of a solo legacy or get out of town after an implosion, either way works.

The Spurs certainly have the right idea. Should Curry want out, a roster boasting Tony Parker, LaMarcus Aldridge and Kawhi Leonard sure looks great. It’s a core contending on its own right now, with Curry on board it would be the Association’s latest powerhouse.

Look, every team will target Curry when he hits free agency. But the Spurs get a nod here because they’re arguably the most realistic landing spot of all, should he choose to pack his bags and start over elsewhere.

Odds are Curry sticks with the Warriors no matter what. But many said the same thing of Durant with the Thunder. Rest assured the Spurs have a close eye on the situation while sitting as the early favorite.
