What started as a group of players meeting up in Storrs, Conn., during the offseason with a goal of returning UConn to the upper echelon of basketball’s ranks, culminated Monday night in a national championship for the University of Connecticut.
For the Huskies to have success when the starters aren’t having their best game, they’ll need the bench to contribute like they did this past Saturday.
Watch and/or listen below as UConn head coach Geno Auriemma, Breanna Stewart and Katie Lou Samuelson talk about the play of the bench.
Here’s a scary thought for opponents of the UConn Huskies women’s basketball team. Breanna Stewart gets better by the minute according to head coach Geno Auriemma.
In her first three games of what she and her teammates hope will be a fourth straight national title, Stewart has been consistent on the offensive end of the floor averaging 24.7 points, nine rebounds and four assists per game. Defensively, she’s averaging 3.3 blocks and six of those nine rebounds she’s averaging are coming on the other end of the floor.
And that’s what makes Stewart great. She can do it on both ends of the floor.
Watch and/or listen as Auriemma talks about how Stewart is playing consistent basketball and getting better.
Has UConn women’s basketball freshman Katie Lou Samuelson turned the corner?
After struggling from the floor in the first two games, Samuelson had her best game of her brief UConn women’s basketball career in a 42 point win over Nebraska this past Saturday with 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting including 2-of-4 from three-point land. She also dished out three assists and had three rebounds.
More impressively though during one sequence of events, Samuelson hit a three-pointer and then went down to the defensive end and drew a charge.
The expectations are high for Samuelson at UConn but for now a little goes a long way as far as her confidence is concerned.
Watch and/or listen below as UConn women’s basketball head coach Geno Auriemma, Breanna Stewart, Naphessa Collier and Samuelson talk about her performance vs Nebraska.

Before the season started, UConn Huskies football head coach Bob Diaco had said that wide receiver Noel Thomas had a chance to become a special player in Storrs, CT. So far Thomas has made Diaco look good on that.
When you get a chance to see Thomas play, you can tell he’s a step above the rest. But it’s what he does in practice that makes him a better player.
You’ll see him working with the younger guys, whether it be on the JUGS machine or working on their hand/eye coordination to helping with routes, Thomas is there being a leader.
During his press conference on Tuesday, Diaco talked about Thomas’ growth. Thomas also talked about what he’s done on and off the field to be a better person and football player.
All along his tenure at UConn, head football coach Bob Diaco has talked about the next man in philosophy. By this he means, if you’re a backup, you’re expected to come in an do your job.
With the loss of Tommy Myers at tight end, others will now be called upon to do what Myers did. And it won’t be easy as he did just about everything on offense except pass the ball.
Believe it or not, Temple Owls LB Tyler Matakevich was recruited by the UConn Huskies. But it wasn’t the football team, it was the baseball program.
You can’t blame UConn football head coach Bob Diaco for that one. It came under the regime of Paul Pasqualoni, who seemingly had the ins of keeping a good player like Matakevich in the state.
Instead, he got away to Temple and has been wreaking havoc on teams including UConn football.
On Tuesday, Diaco talked about Matakevich and gave a quick preview of the Temple offense and defense.
The UConn football team will learn their destination most likely next weekend. But in the meantime, there’s just as an important piece as getting to a bowl game, extra practices.
With a young team, just 14 seniors, extra practices are beneficial from a developmental stand point. And as UConn football head coach Bob Diaco pointed out in his press conference on Tuesday, it shortens the offseason.
After Monday night’s 40 point win over Kansas State, UConn women’s basketball head coach Geno Auriemma had a tough time finding a player comparable to Gabby Williams that he has coached in Storrs.
He ultimately thought that Tamika Williams (no relation) was the last player to have the athleticism of Gabby Williams. Tamika Williams came to UConn in 1998 as part of the Fab Five recruiting class. So we are talking about 17 years here.
Watch and/or listen below as Auriemma talks about Gabby Williams athleticism:
30 years ago last Monday, UConn women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma coached his first game at the University of Connecticut versus Iona in New Rochelle, NY.
On that anniversary, Auriemma talked about that night.
After Saturday’s 20-17 win over the Houston Cougars, students and fans of the UConn Huskies football team stormed the field to celebrate the big win and bowl eligibility with the team.
When the students and fans got to UConn football head coach Bob Diaco, they tried to mess his hair up. Unfortunately for them they didn’t get too far.
