On Friday, Jaguars general manager David Caldwell joined Mike Florio on Pro Football Talk. Caldwell let us in on the way the Jaguars are handling players with just one year left on their contract.
While Caldwell was adamant that Jones-Drew would not be traded during the draft, he did not say the Jaguars were committed to Jones-Drew over the long haul. Jones-Drew is schedule to make just short of $5 million in 2013 [via Rotoworld], and considering that he is 28 years old, it's unclear whether the Jaguars will want to sign him to another big contract.
The Jaguars have good reason to wait and see if they want to re-sign their star running back. Jones-Drew's season was cut short after playing in just six games. The Jaguars' new regime likely wants to see how well Jones-Drew recovers from the foot injury that sidelined him for most of the 2012 campaign.
It's worth noting that Jones-Drew was the top running back in 2011 with 1,606 yards, and in 2012, Jones-Drew set his career average rushing mark at 4.8 yards per carry, although it was on just 86 attempts.
