In an unsurprising move, the New England Patriots cut defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth. Haynesworth, who was acquired in a trade with the Redskins, played in 6 games for the patriots recording just 3 tackles. In their most recent loss to the Giants, Haynesworth was largely ineffective and was pulled from the game in the 3rd quarter.
Haynesworth played for the Titans for 7 very successful seasons from 2002-2008. He then landed in Washington, supposedly taking the role of nose tackle in a 3-4 scheme, something he didn’t want to do. Ultimately, his lack of effort and his clash with Mike Shanahan was what got him traded to the Patriots. The deal included him taking a big pay cut. The low risk deal has seemingly not worked out for the Patriots, however.
Haynesworth will be subject to waiver claims as it’s past the trade deadline, but I would personally be shocked if anyone decides to make a gamble on him, regardless of how small of a gamble it actually would be. Rumors as to where he’ll land have already been floating around, and the consensus pick seems to be with the Philadelphia Eagles.
