The Philadelphia Eagles Won’t Win The Super Bowl

Philadelphia is dreaming!  They’re under the assumption that the NFL operates like baseball where you can buy a championship or two and call it a day. Fortunately for the fans, the NFL has become the one of the most competitive professional sports leagues in the world and in my opinion the Eagles will be lucky to win the NFC much less a Super Bowl.

First, lets give the Eagles credit where credit is due. They went all out this off-season and signed stud after stud after stud. If you weren’t aware they signed Jason Babin, Evan Mathis, Rodgers-Cromartie, Cullen Jenkins, Ronnie Brown, Vince Young, Donald Lee, Jarrad Page, Ryan Harris, and Asomugha.  So……..yeah……..123283377_display_image

Everybody was already thinking it but when Vince Young, who has history of saying stupid things, opened his trap and uttered, “We’re like the Dream Team of the NFL,” the Eagles officially lost any chance of winning the Super Bowl.

Think about this, besides the Olympic Dream Team of 1992 who has actually declared their greatness and followed through? To my knowledge, only the Jets actually finished what Namath started and at least he waited till the championship to make a guarantee.

So if history is against the Eagles is that a reason to bet against their organizations FIRST EVER Super Bowl? In a word, Yes!

This is the National Football League and winning a game within this league is one of the most difficult tasks in professional sports. Every week a team gets upset and every year the favorite losses in the playoffs. Look at the Chargers and their decade of annually losing despite the hype. In fact, look at the Eagles history of never quite making it all the way. Does anyone remember Eli Manning winning a Super Bowl against the greatest football team the world has ever seen?  What about the collegiate Seahawks stunning the Saints last year? The NFL is about reality checks and in my opinion the Eagles are going to get a few of them this year.

However, lets say the Eagles overcome the reality check known as life. Lets say they make the playoffs despite their spotty offensive line. Lets say Desean Jackson over looks his contract situation and decides not to be Terrell Owens. Let’s assume teams didn’t learn from their mistakes last year and don’t game plan appropriately for Vick. Heck, lets assume that Vick has another career year in virtually every meaningful QB stat in existence. Finally, let’s assume Vick stays healthy. The Eagles still won’t win. Why?

First, Vince Young ruined any chance by talking. Second, everything I mentioned above is a lofty assumption that is very unlikely to occur. Third, the Eagles only play four playoff quality defenses throughout the entire regular season. Sure they play the Giants a few times but Coughlin is picking players up off the streets at this point. The Cowboys and Falcons have great offenses but who knows what their defenses will look like this year. In my opinion, the Eagles are going to set offensive records all season long and the hype and pressure will continue to grow bearing down on the players and coaches alike. Then the playoffs will come and they’ll face a real defense where Vick will have to fight the inner urge of doing the “Dirty Bird” after his one touchdown.

Don’t kill the messenger. I realize my argument has no quantifiable means of declaring the Eagles a bust. I realize the Eagles in all respects should make the Super Bowl.  However, Vince Young set the Eagles fate in early August. Super Bowl of Bust? I’m betting heavily on Bust.
