Five NFL dynasties that never were

Dallas Cowboys, 1970-1978
Championships: 2
Playoff wins: 14
Record: 94-34 (2nd in NFL during that span)
Biggest dynasty obstacle: Steelers, Dolphins, three Super Bowl losses

The Cowboys certainly had a dynasty with Troy Aikman at quarterback in the 1990s, and they still won two championships during this stretch, so they Dallas folk can’t be too crestfallen over the fact the Roger Staubach-led ‘Boys don’t deserve to be considered a dynasty.

This comes down to the fact you can’t have multiple dynasties at one time. It’s amazing that Staubach and head coach Tom Landry — with help from Tony Dorsett, Randy White, Bob Hayes, Cliff Harris, Rayfield Wright and Drew Pearson and Craig Morton, who actually quarterbacked Dallas in that 1970 Super Bowl — were able to play in five Super Bowls during a nine-year span in the 1970s, but they lost three of those games.

And during that same stretch, Pittsburgh won three championships (beating Dallas twice), while Miami won two. In order to be a dynasty, you have to win more championship than everyone else within that window.
