Five NFL dynasties that never were

Minnesota Vikings, 1969-1977
Championships: 0
Playoff wins: 9
Record: 96-29-1 (2nd in NFL during that span)
Biggest dynasty obstacle: Steelers, Dolphins, four Super Bowl losses

Again, there can’t be multiple dynasties at the same time. Had the Vikings been this good during any other decade, they might have won some championships in order to earn dynasty status. But alas, despite dominant quarterback play from Joe Kapp in 1969 and Fran Tarkenton the rest of that stretch, Minnesota managed to lose four Super Bowls in eight years while Dallas, Miami and Pittsburgh were all dominating to a more significant extent.

It’s a shame that resembles that of Buffalo’s failed dynasty two decades later, because they don’t even have one championship to take solace in. And both teams had legendary quarterbacks.

Plus, the Vikings had sort of a dynasty feel, thanks partly to Tarkenton and Hall of Fame head coach Bud Grant and partly to that famous defensive front, which gained the moniker “Purple People Eaters.”

Unforgettable team, but not a dynasty.
